Intro to Reading Three weeks ago, we read about Jesus at a meal with a tax collector. The Jewish people had a gracious system to provide public revenue for widows, orphans and the homeless. They had tithes and land tax, but so-called “tax collectors” were people who went outside that system and disgracefully collaborated with the foreign Roman Empire. The tax collector was someone who needed divine grace and he found it in a meal with Jesus. Two weeks ago…

Introduction Thursday morning, 30th of June 2022. 4.35 am at my desk seeking to write my reflection for today. I woke up around 2.30 am lying in the bed re-reading Chapter 3, of ‘A Meal with Jesus’ – Meals as Enacted Hope. After re-reading the chapter I got up and went to the kitchen. Washed the pots and wok, plates and bowls, and started making soup for Thursday’s study group. As I washed, I was reflecting on the chapter I…

Like Janus* let’s look backwards and forwards I do not need to tell you this is an historic moment in the life of this faith community which began here even before the building of that historic chapel one hundred and sixty-six years ago. God, may my words be loving and true; and may those who listen discern what is not. Amen. Today is Trinity Sunday. The Trinity is one of the central doctrines, or teachings, of the Christian tradition. Often poorly understood, it seems as though we are told there are two essential things to know about the Trinity: First, you must believe it. Second, you cannot even pretend to understand it. This second point often gives rise to the suspicion that the…

Text:               Acts 2:1-21 Introduction Today the Church worldwide celebrates Pentecost Sunday. Someone shout: “SO WHAT.” And some people might ask, “IS THIS A TRUE STORY?” And my answer is: This story is undeniably true!  Now for some that answer might not be enough and they’d want to know, “DID THIS ACTUALLY HAPPEN?”  Well, if you want me to be honest, I’d like to think so. But I doubt that it actually happened.  But whether it actually happened or not, most of…
