Christ’s “mandate” to love, is commemorated on Maundy Thursday.
“Maundy” is a shortened form of the Latin mandatum meaning “command.”
It was on the Thursday of Jesus’ final week that he and his disciples shared the Passover meal and he washed their feet, the duty of the servant.
Jesus then asked of his disciples a most serious demand:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).
What is this standard of love Jesus asks of us?
