Introducing our New Supply Minister*

After bidding goodbye to Rev. Dhirendra Narayan at the end of August – he has taken a permanent placement in another congregation – we now welcome Rev. Beth Bear. She writes by way of introduction: Hello MUC and thank you for welcoming me for the next few months. I am a Minister of the Word in placement as chaplain at The Scots School Albury and have been here since 2016. My favourite parts of my ministry are building community and…

Communion during COVID-19 – the wandering continues

A few months ago, I shared a theological reflection on communion during COVID-19. I said then that I had wrestled with this and spoken to colleagues, some of whom were celebrating communion online according to the Assembly guidelines and some of whom, like me, felt deeply uncomfortable doing so. Theologically, I view the church as a body – not a new or original idea! – a whole body with different parts which work together, not apart. At the time of…

COVID Update – 10 July 2020

Dear Friends and Members of Manningham Uniting Church, As you know, the restrictions have been increased by the Victorian Sate Government due to the number of COVID-19 cases.  As always, we continue to follow the advice of the State Government and the Synod.  The following protocols are now in place for the next 6 weeks. The church buildings are closed – no church groups or tenants will be using the buildings – but the church itself is very much open…

Introducing our Supply Minister*

My name is Rev. Dhirendra Narayan and I am an ordained minister within the UCA. Following my ordination, in December 2000, I have served in the Eastern Mallee rural parish, in Swan Hill, where I had five rural congregations spread over a large area. Following that placement, I served in Rosanna and then at Wesley, Box Hill, where I concluded my placement in 2018. After some much-needed time out I did some supply ministry at Plenty Valley, Mill Park, and…

Narrative lectionary readings

Until 13 September, the Narrative Lectionary does not set readings for each Sunday allowing the preacher to return to some themes or books of the bible, or to spend some time in other books and stories we don’t usually read and study together. Later in the year, COVID-19 allowing, we will be running a Bible study on the book of Revelation. This is one that chills the hearts of some and excites others, but it isn’t one we tend to…

Theological reflection on communion during COVID-19

The serving of communion during COVID-19 is a tricky one. Depending on your theology of communion, the way you understand communion, you will have formed your own views. What follows are my views as well as an explanation of the reflection I have undertaken whilst forming these views. After much discussion at worship portfolio, we have reached a decision to not celebrate communion whilst our services are online. I know some people are not going to agree with this decision…

Piggy Banks – Compassion Children

The sponsorship money for our Compassion Children has always been raised through donations in the piggy banks. However at this time, when we are not meeting each week, this has not been possible. So we are asking if you would like to continue or even start supporting Jordan, Bert and Dickson that you find your own piggy bank or container and put in the change that you would normally put in the piggy bank at church each Sunday. When our isolation is over and we all meet back again we can then all bring our containers to church and combine what we have collected.

Giving in a time of Crisis

We are all facing difficult times and some more than others. Even though we are not meeting physically we are doing many different ways to keep in touch. Some, who are in a position to do so, have indicated that they would like to keep on giving. Some who are better off at this time have indicated they would like to give more generously. This may even lessen the burden on others.
