After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

Prayer

Jesus, wash me in your blood from head to toe, so I may live in unity with you. Teach me to share  your message of redemption with those who are not yet cleansed.

To Ponder

Was this simply a lesson in humility, or is there more to this story?  By washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus is setting aside his higher status and performing a task reserved for servants and slaves. A symbol of the far greater sacrifice he would make on the cross. The message is clear. Only those who agree to be washed by the blood of His sacrifice can claim to have any connection or involvement with Jesus. May we each respond as Peter did and invite Jesus to cleanse us from head to toe and share this message with those who still bear the dust of this life on their feet.
