This week’s reading is Mark 12:1-17 and includes Jesus talking about paying taxes to Caesar. (See bible reading here)
Our symbol is open hands
Open hands symbolise our approach to God – open hands to receive what God gives us and then keeping our hands open and sharing with others, not holding on to it tightly with clasped hands. Tax in Jesus’ time was different from now. At that time, it was a flat rate poll tax charged to every single person and used to support the Roman Empire. Today we use taxes to help those on low incomes and to build infrastructure etc.
- I wonder what it would be like if money didn’t exist at all – what sort of world would it be?
- Is there a system different from tax that would ensure people are supported and our communities function effectively?
- Can you think of a story from Scripture that relates to this?
