Cooking is always a popular pastime so Wendy and I decided to ‘give it a go’ with the English Conversation Class, on 31 May, 2019.
We began by explaining the origins of Australian damper, and Wendy showed them a Camp Oven she had brought along, and explained its workings. Then came the damper making with students helping. Into the oven went the damper, and then we make scones.
While the damper and scones were cooking, a cut and paste worksheet about how to make the damper was completed, involving the recognition of words and filling in the gaps. Needless to say the completed sheet became a good reading exercise.
Then came Morning Tea when we all enjoyed the ‘fruits of our labour’ by sampling freshly baked damper with golden syrup; and scones with jam and cream.
Later Wendy showed them kitchen utensils, and explained their uses. A big hit was the mystery item. A guessing game followed as to what it was used for. Wendy gave a demonstration, and it turned out it was small machine turned by hand which peeled apples, then cored them.
It was a fun day with a lot of practical vocabulary used.
