Peter Bartlett speaks at September’s Combined Service

The MUC congregation swelled by visitors from Ears Inc., packed the Atkinson Street church to hear special speaker Peter Bartlett, son of Don and
Helen who, with his wife Rebecca and three daughters, spent 6 years working in Malawi, East Africa with Ears Inc. where they established a Hearing Clinic and Training Centre.

Peter based his talk around Proverbs 31:10-31( read by Jon Martin) and the biblical story telling of Mark 9:30-37 (by Chris Mitchell). Peter particularly concentrated on the Proverbs reading as it related to the struggles and achievements through this six year journey. Peter and Rebecca had a real sense of call to this work and constantly sought God’s guidance as they tackled one challenge after another.

As the first permanent audiologists in Malawi, Peter and Rebecca had a monumental task in this desperately poor country where hearing loss is extremely high, primarily because of disease and the side effects of Malaria treatment. Their vision was to establish a hearing clinic and train Malawians to run it.

Eight years on and the capital Lilongwe now has a fully equipped clinic run by competent indigenous staff and a 4WD and mobile audio booth to service rural areas. With ongoing outside support, the African Bible College, where the clinic is based, has also launched a university audiology degree course.

Throughout this remarkable journey this work has been generously supported by MUC so Peter is very grateful for that support. A retiring offering of $1078 to help to continue the work begun by Peter and Rebecca in Malawi was received.

Following the service Peter was able to connect with old friends from former Templestowe UC, the church in which he grew up. Peter and Rebecca and family have now returned to live in Ballarat but each has returned several times to Malawi to supervise the ongoing work there.
