In 2015 Manningham Uniting Church (MUC) embarked on a journey to explore the redevelopment of one or more of its sites to better serve the needs of the community. The Templestowe site, between Atkinson Street and Wood Street, was chosen and after much planning and preparation the project is set to start in August.
Together with diverse and flexible worship spaces, the new MUC community building will assist as a gathering and meeting place, and as a base from which to interact and partner. It will include a café, shared workspace, playground, community rooms which will be available to hire and underground car park.
Repositioning of the timber church will be the first visible sign the project has started, followed by the demolition of the Upper Hall and Hub. The brick church will remain and be connected to the new building.
During the project pedestrian access between Wood Street and Atkinson Street will be closed. It is presently accessible until late this year, but will not be available during all of 2020.
On 2 Aug at 4.00pm the community is invited to attend a ‘turning of the first sod’ ceremony in the Shared Garden (entrance off the carpark) to symbolise the commencement of the project.
