Who is Jesus in the 21st Century?

Who is Jesus in the 21st Century?

Whatever name, title or description we give Jesus –

Whatever name, title or description we give Jesus –
and there are many – this much is certain:
He is without question
the most influential person in human history.

Not alone by his words, but by his life and being,
Jesus ushered in a giant leap in human consciousness –
from egoism to altruism,
from obsession with self to concern for the other.

We know that this made Christianity attractive
amid the barbarities of the old Roman Empire –
the way its devotees cared about other human beings.

Jesus has always been the one to arouse, to energise,
to focus and to guide the best in a human being.
That it doesn’t always happen should not surprise.
He is also a rebuke to the selfishness in us all,
and in that sense he is offensive to us.

But properly understood,
Jesus is the one who can bring the best out of a person.
This is why we need to liberate him from high-falutin titles,
from the pagan trappings of a tinsel Christmas,
from images of a harmless wimp
embedded in sweet sentimentality!

(Some Greeks came to Philip and said to him)
“Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” (John 12:21)
