With the upcoming building works at Atkinson Street, the English Conversation class moved to Westfield Drive at the beginning of 4th term. The volunteer tutors and students have settled in well and are enjoying the extra space and comfort of the carpeted meeting room. The proximity of the large well-resourced kitchen is very useful for our morning tea breaks too.
Word of mouth continues to bring along new students who enjoy the friendly and supportive atmosphere. We now have 16 to 18 students or more every week. A highlight of this term was the visit of Leading Senior Constable Carla Reardon from Manningham Crime Prevention who visited us on 19th October and spoke to us about staying safe in the community, a topic that engaged all the students and the tutors as well. We covered topics such as when smacking children is a crime, and what to do when your car is involved in an accident. Other weeks we have covered topics such as: Australian history, Keeping Healthy, Cup Day, The word ‘up’, Word games and Housing. MUC English Conversation classes are held every Friday from 10am to 12noon at 20 Westfield Drive, Doncaster. They are free and open to any migrant who would like to improve their spoken and written English. As student numbers are increasing we would love to have a few more people on the roster next year, whether you would like to lead, help set up, organise morning tea or simply sit with students to help them practise their English.
